Bytown on Track
..Three
Bytowners travelled to southern Ontario on the 20-21 February for two
successful indoor competitions. On Friday night, they competed in Hamilton's
famed Copps Coliseum in a meet with a venerable history dating back to
the legendary Hamilton Spectator Indoor Games and even before. The event
was a Race Walk sprint, the 1500m. After just over seven minutes of exciting
racing, Joanne LaMontagne drove powerfully away from the pack for the
last 500m to record an impressive victory (7:23.19). Caroline Samson
finished second with a spectacular PB of 7:33.53 and Canadian W50 record
holder Linda Wilson also recorded a big PB finishing sixth in 7:51.32. |
..About 18 hours later, the trio lined up for the Provincial 3000m championship in the track and field centre on the campus of York University. Joanne once more raced to an untroubled victory in 16:03.85. A tight race for 3-4-5 (one spectator compared it to NASCAR!) was resolved in favour of Caroline, capping an excellent weekend with a provincial bronze medal and another PB (16:51.38). Linda won a sprint for 4th in 16:54.42. |
